I recently got to interview Ernest Rutherford this week, here are some facts i got from him.
- Ernest Rutherford lived from the 30th of August 1871 to the 19th of October 1937.
- He first studied at Canterbury college, then he moved to England where he went to Cambridge.
- He got his own element, Rutherfordium
- In 1908 Rutherford got the Nobel Prize
- He was the first one to mark out the new type of physics, radioactivity.
- At Cambridge, he worked with J.J. Thomson
- Using a detector for electromagnetic, he studied the behavior of ionized gases.
- In 1899, he discovered radiation he called alpha and beta.
- While he studied at McGill, he conjured up the idea that radioactivity is the disintegration of atoms to change completely.
- However, his theory was rejected by most chemists that believed that matter was indestructible.
- He discovered radiation called gamma, he found it was more powerful than alpha and beta.
- In 1903, Rutherford was knighted by the Royal Society.
- In 1904, he was awarded the Rumford ''medal
- In 1919 he was the first person to transform one element to another.
- He transformed nitrogen to oxygen through a nuclear reaction.
- Niels Bohr was his assistant
- In 1921, Bohr and Rutherford gave their theory about the existence of neutrons.
- 1932, James Chadwick proved their theory.
- In 1937, this great physicist died in Cambridge, he was buried in Westminster Abbey.
- Rutherford's model is the closest to the modern model, his model includes electrons, neutrons, and protons.
